Pool Cleaning Basics
last update on: 09/15/2026
Standard Pool Maintenance for New Hires is a practical 1–2 hour course designed for employees in their first 90 days who will help maintain the corporate office pool. Attendees will learn how to perform routine pool checks, recognize when the pool needs cleaning, replace the pool filter, and use water testing equipment to confirm whether the pool is safe for use.
The course covers how to collect and test a water sample, read pool test strips or testing equipment, and compare results against acceptable ranges. Special focus is placed on pH, including the proper range for acceptable pool use: 7.2–7.6. Attendees will also learn key water balance targets, including free available chlorine at 1–4 ppm, total alkalinity at 60–120 ppm depending on sanitizer type, calcium hardness at 200–500 ppm, and stabilizer at 20–50 ppm.
By the end of the course, attendees will be able to identify signs that cleaning is needed, such as debris, cloudy water, algae growth, odors, or swimmer discomfort; explain when pool water is outside acceptable limits; and complete the standard filter replacement process used at the corporate office.
This course does not cover replacing pool water if all water tests fail.
Each module ends with a 5-question multiple choice quiz to confirm understanding before moving forward.
